Course description

Introduction to Occupational Health and Safety: Participants will gain a solid foundation in occupational health and safety, understanding its importance, legal obligations, and the moral imperative of ensuring a safe work environment. They will explore the roles and responsibilities of employers, employees, and regulatory bodies in maintaining workplace safety.

Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification: This module focuses on identifying workplace hazards and assessing associated risks. Students will learn techniques for conducting risk assessments, including hazard identification, risk analysis, and risk evaluation. They will understand how to prioritize hazards based on severity and likelihood, enabling them to develop appropriate control measures.

Safety Legislation and Regulatory Compliance: Participants will study the legal and regulatory frameworks governing occupational health and safety. They will learn about relevant legislation, standards, and guidelines, and understand the importance of compliance. They will also explore the role of regulatory bodies and the consequences of non-compliance.

Participants will learn about emergency planning, evacuation procedures, first aid and CPR, fire safety, and the role of safety committees. They will understand how to develop emergency response plans and conduct drills to ensure a prompt and effective response.

They will understand the role of organizational culture, leadership, and support systems in fostering a mentally healthy work environment.

Participants will learn strategies for delivering effective safety training, developing safety communication plans, and engaging employees in safety initiatives. They will understand the importance of clear communication, hazard awareness, and accountability in preventing accidents.

Incident Investigation and Continuous Improvement: This segment focuses on incident investigation techniques and the importance of continuous improvement in occupational health and safety. Students will learn how to conduct thorough incident investigations, analyze root causes, and develop corrective and preventive measures. They will understand the role of data analysis, performance indicators, and feedback loops in driving continuous improvement.
